18F-FDG-PET/CT has been proposed as an important imaging modality for detecting Infective Endocarditis (EI). However, intense inhomogeneous physiological myocardial 18F-FDG uptake may mask the valve lesion. We have demonstrated that a low carbohydrate, high protein, high fat diet starting 72 hours before the examination with classic overnight fasting reduces myocardial uptake and helps the detection of IE. This diet suppresses cardiac glucose metabolism significantly better than other protocols, leading to a significant improvement in the interpretability and diagnostic accuracy of 18F-FDG PET scans for detection of IE.
This apps goal is to help patients on following correctly the diet to improve the exams accuracy and lead to a more correctly diagnosis.
